Ramblings of a Slacker

Hey, what are you doing over there? asks my mother
Oh, nothing, just sleeping my life away
I like to listlessly dream dreams and speak monologues
Of my own maturity yet when it comes down to it
I’m just one of the lazy good-for-nothing cows
That won’t get anywhere in the big fat dairy farm of life.

Hey, what are you doing over there? asks my father
Oh, nothing, just drawing out my life plans
On college-ruled paper or the double meaning of dragging them out
Because I make excuses for my so-called
Smarts when it suits me and when these plans don’t work out
Because of my lack of effort I go right back to sleep.

Hey, what are you doing over there? asks my sister
Oh, nothing, just drinking this Venti Caramel Latte
Because it wakes me up to reality when I’m too tired
And though the contacts I wear bring out the red in my eyes
And my steady artists’ hands take a well-needed vacation
It’s good to feel like Superwoman sometimes.

Hey, what are you doing over there? asks Life
Oh, nothing, just drowning in the music
I like to plug in but what I’m doing when I stick those things in my ears
Is tuning out the moral of the story which is that
You can’t really escape those ninjas behind you
Even if you avoid them the Kung-Fu will eventually catch up.
